President to Begin National Tour

"Only connect,” wrote E.M. Forster. “Always connect,” declares T.J. Hochstettler. The phrase is more than a neat summary of the president’s commitment to building and maintaining relationships—it’s also a concise action plan and the basis for an ambitious alumni tour he is undertaking this fall.

In October, November, and December, Tom Hochstettler will be visiting alumni, parents, donors, and friends in the East, Midwest, and West. Each stop is an opportunity for people connected with any of the College’s three schools to gather, to celebrate what the College has done, and to look forward to where it is going. Hochstettler will share his vision and ambitions for the College, and invite those present to talkabout their experiences and expectations.

“Our very founding confounded expectations, conventional thinking, and the wisdom of the day,” notes Hochstettler. “And we have been exceeding expectations ever since.” That pattern gives the tour its title and main theme: Beyond Expectations. “I’m eager to share my thoughts on our future and to talk with alumni and friends throughout the country about ways of harnessing the energy and goodwill that so many people hold because of Lewis & Clark College,” says Hochstettler.

Specific dates and venues were still being set when this issue of theChronicle went to press. The Beyond Expectations tour will visit the following cities during the weeks indicated:

October 17-21: New York City, Boston, Washington, D.C.

November 7-11:Minneapolis, Denver

December 5-8: Seattle, San Francisco, Los Angeles
