Merhige National Environmental Negotiation Competition
This national competition, hosted by the University of Richmond Law School in Richmond, Virginia, focuses on the resolution of environmental disputes through mutual-gains negotiation techniques. Each fall, Lewis & Clark law students compete for a place on the national team through an in-school competition judged by local environmental attorneys, negotiators and mediators. Chosen team members then hone their negotiation skills in the spring through a series of practice negotiation sessions. The competition is generally held the first week in April. In the first five years Lewis & Clark has competed in the national competition, our students have placed in the semifinals four times and the finals three times.
