College of Arts and Sciences Academics Environmental Studies

Environmental studies situates environmental problems and solutions in a scholarly context, working alongside other academic disciplines to build a more livable world. The field crosses traditional disciplinary boundaries, as deeper understanding of environmental problems and solutions requires attention to a wide range of concepts and analytical methods spanning the sciences and humanities.

The Environmental Studies Program at Lewis & Clark benefits from the participation of many departments in the College of Arts and Sciences, as well as the School of Law and Graduate School of Education and Counseling. We offer students opportunities for environmental research and engagement on campus, in nearby Tryon Creek State Park, in the Portland metropolitan area, in the Pacific Northwest, and in conjunction with Lewis & Clark’s excellent Overseas and Off-Campus Programs. The Environmental Studies Program thus combines intellectual rigor and breadth with practical experience in this vibrant, transdisciplinary field of scholarly inquiry.

"I remember coming out of my first course in the program with a changed perception of what 'environmentalism' means...I once viewed environmentalism to be limited to 'green' activities and campaigns, such as recycling or saving polar bears. I now see many more layers of complexity and interrelationships."

Amber Shasky, ENVS Alumna
