department: Philosophy and Exploration and Discovery office: 227 J.R. Howard Hall phone: 503-768-7732 e-mail: cushman@lclark.edu
Education: Ph.D. University of California at Berkeley, 2003 B.A. Harvard University, 1991
Eddie received his B.A. in Philosophy from Harvard University (1991) and his Ph.D. in Philosophy from the University of California at Berkeley (2003). Before coming to Lewis & Clark, he taught for five years in the Philosophy Department and the freshman Humanities Program at Reed College.
Eddie’s research and advanced teaching in philosophy generally fall in the areas of epistemology (the theory of knowledge), philosophy of mind, and philosophy of language. However, he has always derived great satisfaction from teaching Introduction to Philosophy, since it is here that many students get their first systematic exposure to some timeless and gripping questions about the human condition. Eddie is currently at work on series of papers in epistemology as well as a book-length introduction to analytic philosophy, largely based on teaching materials he has developed in a liberal arts setting.
