Education: Ph.D. Yale University, 2002 B.A. Queens College, CUNY, 1995
Michael received his B.A. in English Literature and French Literature from Queens College, CUNY (1995) and his Ph.D. in Comparative Literature from Yale University (2002). Previously he taught for five years in the English Department and the Humanities Program at Reed College.
Michael has taught courses on the modern British novel, the post-war and contemporary novel, postmodern culture, literary representations of empire, and the politics of modernism. In his teaching Michael is committed to enhancing critical thinking and close reading skills, encouraging students to ask themselves how literary texts complicate the act of interpretation. His research is focused on twentieth-century fiction and critical theory. Currently Michael is working on a book project that addresses the relation of new media forms and technologies to contemporary literature.
