Albany Hall and Quadrangle Remodel

albany1General Description:

Located north of the Miller Humanities Center and west of the Olin Center for Physics and Chemistry, Albany Quadrangle is envisioned as the heart of the academic section of the Fir Acres Campus. Albany Hall and Quadrangle was originally designed by Herman Brookman and constructed in 1929 as a service building for the estate of Lloyd and Edna Frank. The building encompasses 14,700 square feet distributed amongst three floors, one of which is a daylight basement. When Fir Acres Estate became the site of Lewis & Clark College in 1942, the service building was named Albany Hall and was remodeled to provide space for classrooms, a library, a chapel and a physics laboratory. In 1967 the interior was again remodeled to accommodate general office and classroom spaces. A campus print shop and a computer center have also occupied the building. Most recently Albany Hall provided office and classroom space for the departments of Communications, Sociology, Anthropology and some Graduate School programs.

The renovated historic structure, with the top floor of the center building removed for the creation of a great hall, will house a variety of academic, support and social activities. Permanent services will include the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, the Registrar's office and other student and faculty support services. Other facilities will include coffee and light lunch services and a variety of meeting, office and conference rooms. Albany Center will also provide temporary space for the Lewis & Clark Bicentennial activities from 2003 to 2006 and serve as swing space for offices and classrooms during construction of the Howard Center for the Social Sciences.

The renovation of the existing building will include work on or replacement of all structural, mechanical, electrical and communications systems. In addition to the complete renovation of the existing building, an addition to the south side of approximately 12,000 square feet will be made. The addition, which will house all of the offices in the Albany Center, made necessary the removal of the existing greenhouse and construction of a new greenhouse on the deck of the Olin Center for Physics and Chemistry.
