College of Arts and Sciences Academics Foreign Languages & Literatures

Through a curriculum of on-campus and overseas study, the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures fosters students' ability to learn to think, write, speak, and read critically in a second language. Students also learn to understand the literary, social, and cultural traditions of another people and to prepare for graduate study or professional careers in areas such as teaching, government, and international business. The Department is committed to the concept of overseas study and thus requires all majors (French Studies, German Studies, Hispanic Studies, and Foreign Languages) to spend at least one semester in an approved overseas study program and strongly encourages minors (Chinese, Japanese and Russian) to do the same. All Lewis & Clark students are required to achieve basic competency through the 201 level in one language.
