French Studies

French is the first or second official language in more than 40 countries on five continents. It is spoken by more than 230 million people, and ranked by Language Today, a publication for language professionals, as the second most influential language in the world, trailing only English. Considered to be the universal language of diplomacy French figures among the official working languages of many international organizations including the European Union, the International Olympic Committee, the U.N. and the Red Cross. Developing a strong knowledge of French language and culture will help students obtain a wide variety of attractive professions in an increasingly globalized economy. French Studies majors will be prepared for graduate study, and for careers in education, diplomacy, international business, finance and economics.
