Cap and Gown Pickup
Caps and gowns can be picked up on Wednesday, May 28, from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. room TBA. Commencement Day
Graduates need to arrive at Fields Dining Hall in Templeton Student Center at 9:00 a.m. for Commencement check in and line up.
Formation for Processional - 9:45 a.m.
Formation occurs inside Fields Dining Hall. Graduates will be assembled in lines for the processional by faculty members who serve as marshals. The marshals will check the list and cross off names of anyone not present so that no one's name is called if they are not in attendance. The Registrar, Curt Luttrell, will be available to check the pronunciation of names. This takes one solid hour. Students who are not in line for the formation will not be on the list to be called at the ceremony.
The Processional - 10:00 a.m.
Follow the instructions of the faculty marshals. A bag piper leads the students, who are followed by the faculty and the platform party.
Conferring of Degrees
Following the commencement address, the Dean of the Graduate School will "present" the class. He or she will ask all the graduates to stand, and then the graduates will be asked to come forward to receive their degrees.
Graduates will come forward by programs in rows. The faculty marshal will instruct each row when it is time to proceed towards the stage. Leave your caps on your seats as you will be hooded on stage. When you are next to be called, stop at the Podium of the Name Caller until your name is called.
As soon as your name is read, proceed across the stage to the faculty member who is hooding the graduates. Turn to face the audience and the faculty member will hood you.
Next, the Dean will shake your hand. Then a photographer will take your picture as President Hochstettler hands you your diploma. Proceed across the stage to receive the congratulations of the commencement speaker and member of the board of trustees.
Finally, proceed down the steps where another photo will be taken and you will be directed to your seat by the faculty marshal.
When you return to your seat after receiving your degree, remain standing until all graduates have received degrees. At that time, all the graduates will be seated.
Returning Caps and Gowns
After the graduation ceremony, please return your cap, gown, and hood to the Jostens representative who will be in the Thayer Room in Templeton.

A short reception will be held immediately after graduation in Fields Dining Hall, or the Manor House lawn if weather permits. We hope that your family and friends will join you there. Miscellaneous Information

The 2008 Commencement Student Speaker
The selection panel for our 2008 student speaker was faced with a difficult assignment. We had four very talented and well-deserving students as finalists in the process. Ultimately, Charlie Ahlquist, from the preservice MAT program, was selected. Following is a brief biography about Charlie.
Charlie attended Lewis & Clark College of Arts and Sciences, and was active as a performer and stage manager in the music department. Tutoring opportunities early in music theory, coupled with a love for choral music, led Charlie to specialize in music education and choral conducting, including a semester of study with the Elysian Singers in London. He graduated in 2007 with honors in Music, and a double major in Psychology. After a one month respite, Charlie began his graduate studies at the Lewis & Clark Graduate School of Education and Counseling. His M.A.T. studies have included work with Dave Becker, and a year long internship with Robert Hawthorne at Southridge High School. While completing his M.A.T., Charlie has remained active in the Portland music community as both a choral soloist and a guitarist, while working with the L&C undergraduate residential community as a Campus Living Coordinator.
When asked about becoming a teacher, he responded, "I find my greatest serenity when I am sharing music with other people. The community and relationships that are developed between individuals who join together in harmony are both supportive and interdependent. I find joy every hour by educating my students about different cultures, our histories, our diversity, and the exhilaration and anguish of the human condition, through the gift of song. I am honored and educated by my students as we all work together to create a collective beauty through music. In a community of learners, we are gestalt - much more as students of a common exploration than we could ever be on individual journeys."
We look forward to hearing his speech at Commencement and congratulate him on this honor, representing all of our graduate students.
