First prize $5000; second prize $2,500; third prize $1,500; and two honorable mentions: $500 each. In 3,000 to 4,000 words students are encouraged to raise questions, single out issues and identify dilemmas on topics suggested by the foundation.

2006 Webb- Smith Essay Competition
Hey Baseball fans,here's your opportunity to win money for a topic you are passionate about. The Department of History at the University of Texas at Arlington announces the 2006 Webb-Smith Essay contest. $500 for the best research essay on Baseball in America and America in Baseball. Historians and scholars are invited to submit essays in English of no more than 10,000 words plus endnotes. The Gilder Lehrman History Scholars Program
The Gilder Lehrman History Scholars Program, inaugurated in 2003, is a competitive summer scholarship program in American history for outstanding college sophomores and juniors. The program, based in New York City, has been designed to both reward undergraduates who have demonstrated superb research and writing skills in the field of American history and to provide an opportunity for the next generation of historians to engage in discussions with eminent scholars and in primary-source research.
