Arthur L. Throckmorton Memorial Lecture

Dr. Throckmorton came to Lewis & Clark College as a member of the History Department in 1950. In 1952, he became head of the committee which developed an intergrated civilization and humanities program. Five years later, he took on the role as chairman of the History Department and served in that compacity until his untimely death in 1962. Dr. Throckmorton helped to establish a Lewis & Clark chapter of Phi Alpha Theta, a national history honorary society. He was also author of Oregon Argonauts: Merchant Adventures in the West Frontier, published by the Oregon Historical Society Press in 1961.

To honor the achievements in the field of history and his contributions to the college, the Throckmorton Memorial Lecture was established the year following his death. The fund established the annual lecture in history, which has been given at Lewis & Clark since 1964. The fist lecture was one of Dr. Throckmorton's professors from the University of Minnesota, Dr. Ernest S. Osgood. In a preface to his lecture, Osgood praised the former Lewis and Clark professor:

"Arthur Throckmorton was a man of courage, of great intergrity, a sound scholar, a great teacher and a gentleman to respect and admire. I am proud to have been his teacher and prouder still to have been his friend."
