Retiree Medical Insurance
Lewis & Clark offers three retiree medical coverage options: two traditional fee-for-service plans through Regence BlueCross BlueShield of Oregon, and one health maintenance organization through Kaiser Permanente. The options differ in the benefit levels they provide, the doctors and hospitals you can use, and the cost. If You Are Retiring:
To participate in one of our retiree medical plans, you must be enrolled in Medicare parts A & B, have at least 5 years of continuous full-time service, and be currently enrolled in one of the College's active medical plans.
If you qualify, you must complete your enrollment materials within 30 days following your date of retirement. Your retiree medical insurance will begin the first of the month after becoming eligible. Lewis & Clark will pay a portion of your premiums and you will be billed quarterly for the remainder. Your spouse may also enroll but they are responsible for the full cost of their premium.
If you are age 65 or over, please apply for Medicare Part B (Medical Insurance) at your nearest Social Security Office two to three months before your date of retirement. The Social Security Office may give you a form to be completed by your employer to verify your retirement and your medical insurance status. Please mail or fax this form to Human Resources. If we have a copy of your letter of retirement at the time we receive your form, we will be happy to complete the form for you and return it to you for delivery to your nearest Social Security Office. Please remember to send or fax us a copy of your Medicare card showing Hospital Insurance and Medical Insurance when you receive it. We need a copy of your Medicare card to properly invoice you.
Once you have Medicare, please remember that Medicare will be your primary insurance and your coverage through Lewis & Clark will be secondary. For services the first month after your date of retirement, you will want to show both your Medicare and your medical insurance card to your health care providers. It will make a difference in how they submit your claims.
Open Enrollment:
If you are already retired and participating in our plan, once a year we provide you with an opportunity to re-evaluate your College medical insurance coverage. The Open Enrollment period occurs annually from mid-November to mid-December with an effective date of January 1. During this time you may change to any of the other College medical insurance plans or add your spouse, if you desire. Disenrollment:
If you decide to terminate your retiree medical insurance coverage through Lewis & Clark College, you must send a letter to Human Resources, Lewis & Clark College, 0615 SW Palatine Hill Road, Portland, OR 97219. Your insurance will be canceled at the end of the month in which we receive your note.
PLEASE NOTE: Once you have terminated your participation, you may not later re-enroll in a College sponsored medical plan.
