What I am doing with my law degree: I work for Davis Wright Tremaine LLP where I split my practice between the areas of trademarks, copyrights, licensing and alcohol regulatory law.

Areas of law my work involves: Intellectual Property, Hospitality, & Advertising. I knew before law school that I wanted to practice intellectual property law. I particularly enjoy trademark law and I find it fascinating because everyone can relate to brands and the look and feel of products. The other big part of my practice involves legal work in the fields of alcohol, food and clothing for Northwest and national clients. As part of this work I advise on all facets of national and international labeling and marketing issues.

Best experience at Lewis & Clark: I really enjoyed participating with the Intellectual Property Student Organization (IPSO) and working on the IP Newsletter. However, my favorite overall experience was being on the law school’s dragon boat team the “Scales of Justice.” It was so much fun and a great workout!

Advice for Prospective Law Students: Get involved and really throw yourself into your area of interest. If you are interested in IP, the best things you can do are be active in the IP legal community, attend IP-related events, and network. Plus, take as many IP classes as possible to widen your general knowledge.

What do you like to do outside of work: I like to hike, camp, canoe, and cook, and I generally spend as much time as possible in the Columbia River Gorge. I also enjoy social activities with my DWT co-workers (I organize the firm bowling and kickball teams).

My favorite course: My favorite course in law school was Trademark Law (surprise!). Adjunct Professor John McCormack brought such a fun and practical perspective on the topic, and I was hooked. Also, although I wasn’t a huge fan of the topic at the time, administrative law has proven to be one of the most useful classes.

What I am most proud of: Moving to the Northwest was one the best decisions I ever made. It is laid-back, people are friendly, there are a lot of activities to do, the legal community is collegial, and Northwest beer, wine and food are outstanding.
