I first learned about Lewis & Clark College from my advisor at Versan Educational Services in Kingston, Jamaica. During the application process, I must admit that I had many fears about coming to Lewis & Clark. I had lived in Jamaica for all of my life and this was to be my first time away from my family for such a long period of time. I was also fearful of adjusting to the culture of the US and, believe it or not, I even worried about the climate differences. After all, I was used to Jamaica's sunny days and very warm weather!
I was accepted to a number of other colleges and universities in the US, but the staff of the International Students and Scholars office made me feel so important and special that I decided to give Lewis & Clark a chance. My decision was also motivated by the financial aid I received as well as the beauty and favorable studying environment of the campus.
Now that I am in Portland, I am excited by the many opportunites that Lewis & Clark offers. They range from activities such as the dance extravaganza and the Gender Symposium, to the chance to travel to other countires with the College's overseas programs. I have been very impressed by the warmth and caring attitude of the staff and students that are here at Lewis & Clark. The professors are very approachable, and they go the extra mile to help you learn.
Because of my very tight schedule (I seem to be busy all of the time!), I have yet to become part of a club or extracurricular activity, but there are several activities on my "to do list." I have to admit, however, that after a week of strenuous school work, I like to relax by hanging out with my friends in downtown Portland, going shopping, clubbing, or to the movies.
One nice surprise about being in Portland? All of the people here know about my country and they think it is really "cool" that I am from Jamaica.
