College of Arts and Sciences International Student Services TCKs/Global Nomads

Who are the TCKs and Global Nomads?

LibraryGroupLewis & Clark enrolls approximately 125 TCKs (Third Culture Kids) or Global Nomads each year. TCKs are individuals who have grown up overseas or have lived overseas for a significant amount of time because of their parents' work. TCKs include US and non-US citizens. Examples include a US student growing up in Malaysia because her mother and father teach at the international school; or, a Korean student who has lived in Singapore, Kuwait, and Vancouver because his father is in the Korean diplomatic corps.

TCKs are known by various names, including "biz kids" (whose parents work for international businesses), "MKs" or "Missionary Kids," "army brats" (whose parents serve abroad with the military), "diplomatic kids" (whose parents serve with the foreign service), and so on. Some prefer the title of "Global Nomad."

TCK Club

Lewis & Clark established a TCK club in 1992. Goals of the TCK Club are:
- to support new TCKs as they adjust to the LC campus
- support international activities off and on campus
- support the creation of a TCK-friendly environment
- educate others about the TCKs
- conduct research on TCKs and their experiences at LC
- support efforts to recruit other TCKs to LC.

The TCK club allows for current TCK students to get together on a more casual level and discuss issues that may arise as a result of having a unique background. The members of the TCK club organize social events such as ethnic dinners, and activities such as ski trips and picnics to allow TCKs to have fun with people with whom they have a lot in common.

TCK Advisory Board

The TCK Advisory Board was established in 1999. The Board meets approximately once a month to implement various activities throughout the year, including resume and career workshops, discussions organized by students and staff, trips, and social events. A TCK Intern, who is supervised by Greg Caldwell, facilitates the Advisory Board meetings and helps organize upcoming events.
