TCK Advisory Board - 2008-09
History and Goals:
The TCK board was first created in the Fall of 2001 with the first TCK intern. The board meets once a month, and the members serve as advisors who generate ideas and plans that the TCK intern will then set into motion. Their main goal is to promote events and advise the TCK intern on projects that they feel will be most effective and support the cause of the TCK group.
Expectations:
- be enthusiastic and creative!
- help the TCK Intern generate ideas for new projects and events aimed at connecting TCKs with other TCKs and with the greater Lewis & Clark Community.
- attend TCK advisory board meetings, held once a month, and regularly attend TCK events, if possible.
Get Involved:
If you are interested in being a member, please fill in a quick application and either e-mail it to the TCK Intern at tck@lclark.edu or bring it to the International Students and Scholars office located on the 2nd floor of Templeton, above the student government offices!
TCK Board Members 2008-2009:
Raymond Kunikane Terhune, Born and raised in Japan, Raymond has the features of an 18 year old, the mind of a wise old grandpa, and the heart of a child. Intending to major in Biochemistry he is said to be the sexiest man on the planet (if not the universe). Because he grew up in the Kansai area he speaks in a strong Osaka dialect which is know to be the most comedic dialect in Japan. He also plays the alto-saxophone, sings, and even acts (even worked with the Peking Opera once). Although he may seem way too out of the ordinary at first when you get to know him you will eventually understand the phrase "Everybody Loves Raymond" and how he himself loves everybody. Past nicknames include: Ray, Doraemon, Almond, Diamond, Lemon, and Daddy
Hiroshi Tomita, a junior environmental sciences major, is a wooden boy who floated to the Pacific coast of the USA from Taipei, Taiwan, R.O.C. (But if you pick him up, you'll see a blurred barcode that claims he was MADE IN JAPAN (with components from Hong Kong and Okayama)). There he was picked up by a bird who roosted on the Lewis and Clark Campus. He still feels phantom waves when he sleeps. One paradox of his life is his fear, yet daft attraction, for fire. He'd love to meet you.
Daniel Bae is a junior biochemistry major, and is this year's TCK Intern. He was born and raised in South Korea until the age of 6, when he and his family moved to Cape Town, South Africa. When he was 16 years old, his family moved again, this time to the US. Daniel's older brother, Joseph, began attending L&C in 2004, and Daniel chose to follow in his brother's footsteps. He previously served on the ISLC board, and he also worked as a Campus Living Adviser in Copeland Hall.Get to know Daniel!
Eve Barker. Eve is a senior TCK who has lived in several countries and has at least six different answers to the question "Where are you from?" She has no idea what she is majoring in. Her family recently moved to Sudan from Afghanistan, where her parents work for relief and development organizations. Eve is involved in the Arabic and Belly Dancing clubs in addition to the TCK group.
Shawn Williams-Brown is a senior at L&C. In his own words, "I'm a TCK from Japan, and I spend most of my time reading and listening to music, or just hanging out with friends, which is one reason I joined the TCK Board. It gives me more time to hang out with fellow TCKs. I lived in Japan for 18 years or so, and I am more comfortable speaking Japanese than I am speaking English. I can generally be found around campus, and I am happy to talk to anyone about anything. I am generally easygoing, although there have been exceptions. I enjoy snowboarding in the winter, and swimming and SCUBA diving in the summer. I love being at L&C, because of the people, because of the atmosphere, and because they have a pool and buses to Mt. Hood in the winter."
Hae-Hee Joung. Hae-hee is South Korean by blood, a Nepali at heart, and a senior Communication major till May 2009! She was born and raised in the beautiful kingdom of Kathmandu, Nepal and came to Portland, Oregon in 2005 to join Lewis & Clark College. She loves experiencing new cultures, meeting new people and when she’s not busy with school, she loves to engage in some good adrenalin pumping extreme sports. She hopes that her passion for art, design and her ability to speak four languages (currently speaks Korean, English, French, and Nepalese and likes to pretend that she speaks Spanish and Japanese at times as well) will land her a job in international marketing in the near future. Get to know Hae-Hee!
Rachael Molitor. Rachael is a senior whose home is in many places. Freshman year was Rachael's first time in the US, before this she has lived in Sierra Leone, Sudan, India, Sri Lanka, Ecuador, and Kenya. In her own words, "One of the main reasons that I came to Lewis and Clark is because they acknowledged TCKs like me. I am planning to major in Psychology and Spanish. When I get my masters degree I want to move back overseas to work. Diversity has always been important to me, and I am glad to be able to promote it even more at Lewis and Clark." Fletcher Bouvier. "I'm a TCK like many others. Half french/ half american and I live in Indonesia when I'm not at school. My major is Int'l affairs but I also write poetry and hang out with purely home-grown american kids. TCK is a sweet extra that lets you meet more people outside your dorm and classes. If you're lucky too some of those kids could be in your classes and in your dorm but you'd never know they were like you. Like this one girl in my SOAN class I had no idea she wasn't all american until I went to TCK Tuesday."
