The Japanese program at Lewis & Clark College offers a Japanese minor, as well as classes for the Foreign Languages and East Asian Studies major. Basic to advanced level courses (four years of study) apply a variety of approaches to integrate linguistic skills, enhance students' strengths, encourage individual learning styles, and monitor closely their individual progress and outcomes. Advanced courses, focusing on culture and society (Fall) and fiction/nonfiction(Spring), continue the development of language skills while deepening the ability to understand and express complex thoughts in Japanese. Literature in translation courses explore both pre-modern and modern fiction, exposing students to the rich tradition of Japanese writing throughout the past thousand years. Study-abroad opportunities take students to northern Hokkaido (Hokusei Gakuen in Sapporo) and to the Kansai region (Kansai-Gaidai near Osaka/Kyoto) and to metropolitan Tokyo (Waseda University).

A variety of career opportunities are available to students who graduate with a strong grounding in the study of Japanese. We have great success placing graduates into the Japanese Exchange and Teaching program (JET), as well as foreign service, international business, graduate study, and teaching.
