Professional Background
After graduating from law school, Professor Patrick clerked for the Honorable David H. Welles on the Tennessee Court of Criminal Appeals for two terms. She then went on to practice law as an Assistant Attorney General in the Criminal Appeals and Death Penalty Division for two years in Nashville, Tennessee, arguing numerous cases before the state appellate and supreme courts, local federal district courts, and one case before the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals. After moving to North Carolina, she went into private practice with the law firm of Kilpatrick Stockton, working primarily in civil and corporate litigation, while also teaching undergraduate law classes at a private university. Patrick then taught legal writing at Wake Forest University for one year before moving to Portland and joining the Lewis & Clark faculty. She is active in the Legal Writing Institute and serves as co-editor of the Institute's biannual journal.
