Living Your Legacy
The afternoon's events include a seminar (1.5 general MCLE credits & 1.0 ethics MCLE credit) and presentations of the Harpole Award and the Harpole Memorial Legacy Scholarship.
About the Seminar
A legal education is perhaps the best preparation for citizenship. As attorneys, we are well versed in the complex workings of government and due process. As citizens, we use these skills to better serve our communities and create permanent, positive change. During this year’s Harpole event, well-known local attorneys will help us refine our service goals. We will also explore the unique challenges attorneys face in their volunteer work. This will not be a critical admonition to Do More Good. Instead, each panel discussion will weave together candid examinations of community, connectedness, service, and the legacies we choose to live and ultimately leave.
About the Harpole Lecture and Awards
Joyce Ann Harpole J.D. ’79 exemplified professionalism with her delight for life and her ability to balance career, family, and community responsibilities. She passed away in 1994 at the age of 42.
Each year, her life is celebrated with the Joyce Ann Harpole Lecture and Awards. The event features a half-day CLE program which culminates in the presentations of the Harpole Award and the Harpole Memorial Legacy Scholarship.
The Harpole Award recognizes a lawyer who is dedicated to the pursuit of justice while maintaining a sense of balance among career, family, and community. The Harpole Scholarship is awarded to a current law school student who demonstrates those qualities and a dedication to his or her legal studies. Both the award and scholarship recipients are nominated by their peers.
2004 Harpole Award
This year's Harpole Award recipient is Patricia Lynn Davis. An esteemed judge for the Confederated Tribes of Coos, Lower Umpqua, and Siuslaw Indians, Davis is also an instructor at Southwestern Community College in Coos Bay and a dedicated single mother. Friends and colleagues admire her "grace and dignity" in all matters, both personal and professional. 2004 Harpole Memorial Legacy Scholarship
The sixth annual Harpole Memorial Legacy Scholarship will be presented to third-year law student Dan Eller. Eller treasures his family members and makes them top priority in his life. At the same time, he successfully blends the demands of law school, community service, and the legal profession to create a full, vibrant life. "Heroes (or heroines) are not giant statues framed against a red sky. They are people who say: This is my community and it's my responsibility to make it better."
Susam Hammer's guiding quote from former Governor Tom McCall.
Cosponsored by Lewis & Clark Law School, Professional Liability Fund, and Oregon Law Institute.
