Susan HammerThe Challenges, Joys and Rewards of Community Leadership

Susan Hammer is a leading mediator in the Pacific Northwest

Hammer will speak to the challenges, joys and rewards of being a community leader. She is the current chair of the PPCW Capital Campaign to build a new regional twelve and a half million dollar service center and Chair of Advisory Board for the Sid Lezak Center for Social Justice at PSU, College of Urban and Public Affairs.Hammer has served as a mediator since 1988. She has served as the President of the City Club of Portland, Board of Trustees of Willamette University,Former Chair of the Board of Planned Parenthood for the Columbia/Willamette.

Hammer has served as a mediator since 1988. She has mediated a range of business and real estate disputes, employment claims of all kinds, personal injury and products liability cases. She is a member of the Oregon and Washington State Bar Associations and a member of the American Bar Association.

Hammer is listed in the Best Lawyers in America 2005, 2006 and 2007 for Alternative Dispute Resolution and in Oregon Super Lawyers, 2006. She is a Fellow in the International Academy of Mediators.



Amy HehnAttorney Award:
Amy Holmes Hehn

Hehn is the senior deputy district attorney currently heading the Domestic Violence Unit of the Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office. Prior to joining the Domestic Violence Unit in November of 2005, Hehn supervised the Juvenile Unit of the district attorney’s office for ten years. A deputy district attorney since 1987, she has a special interest in family welfare issues including child abuse and neglect, domestic violence and juvenile justice. She has been actively involved in juvenile justice system reform work in partnership with the Annie E. Casey foundation. In addition, she worked with the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation for eight years as a member of their Research Network on Adolescent Development and Juvenile Justice. She has spoken at both local and national conferences about the prosecutor’s role in juvenile justice. Hehn is an Oregon native and lives in Northeast Portland with her husband Paul, and her daughters, Cleo and Iris.



Cody ElliottScholarship Award:
Cody Elliott

Law student Cody Elliott will be awarded the 2007 Harpole Memorial Legacy Scholarship. The $4,000 scholarship acknowledges the recipient’s ability to balance a dedication to legal studies with family and community. Elliott is a student in the evening program who works full time as the sales and marketing manager in the restaurant business. He is also a teaching assistant for first year legal analysis and writing. He holds a bachelor of fine arts degree in theater studies with a focus in performance from Boston University, and studied acting at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art. In his free time, he enjoys developing his wine knowledge, and spending time with his wife and 22-month old daughter.

About the Harpole Lecture and Awards
Joyce Ann Harpole J.D.’79 exemplified professionalism with her delight for life and her ability to balance career, family, and community responsibilities. She passed away in 1994 at the age of 42.

Each year, her life is celebrated with the Joyce Ann Harpole Lecture and Awards. The event features a guest speaker and the presentations of the Harpole Attorney Award and the Harpole Memorial Legacy Scholarship.

The Harpole Award recognizes a lawyer who is dedicated to the pursuit of justice while maintaining a sense of balance among career, family, and community. The Harpole Scholarship is awarded to a current law school student who demonstrates those qualities and a dedication to his or her legal studies. Both the award and scholarship recipients are nominated by their peers.
