Network Access Policy

Network Access Policy for Lewis & Clark Law School

The Law School's network is for the use of students, faculty, adjunct faculty, staff and alumni. Network access can either be by using computers owned by the school that are on the school network or it can be by connecting a personal laptop to the network.

Because we want to keep the network secure from viruses, spyware, and malware, laptop connection to the network requires that certain requirements must be met before the laptop can be connected to the network. Those requirements are explained below. Use of school-owned computer equipment is limited to those in the law school community: The general public is not allowed on the network but may use the terminals in the library for legal research.

LAPTOP COMPUTER (Microsoft PC Type) REQUIREMENTS FOR CONNECTING TO THE NETWORK

Those who are eligible to connect a personal laptop to the network must meet certain basic requirements to use their personal laptop computers on the Law School’s network. First, the computer must have the latest Microsoft security updates, and have a valid and updated antivirus software application installed. Once that is confirmed, then Computing Services must install "Clean Access Agent" software on the laptop. The process for installing the updates and the Clean Access Agent can be lengthy, taking an hour or longer to complete.

Those eligible who wish to connect to the network are highly encouraged to install all updates on the laptop before bringing it to the Law School to have the Clean Access Agent software installed. This will streamline the process greatly. To have the laptop checked and to get the Clean Access Agent software installed, make an appointment with the Computing Services Lab Manager, Brian Cutler, bcutler@lclark.edu, or at 503-768-6905. Lab assistants can also perform this work or you may contact anyone in Computing Services to set up an appointment. Please contact Computing Services at comphelp@lclark.edu or 503-768-6644.

MACINTOSH LAPTOP REQUIREMENTS FOR CONNECTING TO THE NETWORK

Those who are eligible to connect a Macintosh laptop to the network need to have a valid and updated antivirus application installed.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

The Computing Services department’s priorities are students, faculty, and staff. Others who connect a laptop to the network must assume the risk when the Clean Access Agent is installed on their laptop. “The Clean Access Agent” may not work due to compatibility issues with the operating system or other software on the owner’s laptop. In the event there are difficulties getting the software to work on a laptop, Computing Services reserves the right to uninstall the Clean Access Agent and network access will not be provided on that laptop.

Those wishing to use computers to assist in classroom presentations are encouraged to use the PC equipment in the classrooms or to make arrangements to borrow a Law School “media laptop” for the presentation(s). To do so, you may contact Law Media Services at lawmedia@lclark.edu. Many folks prefer to bring their classroom materials or presentations with them on portable storage devices, such as CD-R’s or flash memory keys. Then they can easily copy the data to the Law School provided computers in the classrooms.
