Installing Campus Printers Without Novell?

Yes! It is now possible to have the campus printers installed on your PC laptop without the Novell Client being installed.

If you would like to take advantage of this option please come to the computer labs to have a lab assistant do this for you.

PLEASE do NOT attempt to UNINSTALL NOVELL. If done incorrectly it can severely compromise your operating system.

**Problems printing web pages?

When you print a web page, does some of the page get cut off? There are 2 simple solutions to this problem.

1. Before you print the page, view it in "print preview" mode (you can find this option under the "File" menu). In some browsers' print preview mode, there is an option at the bottom of the screen called "shrink to fit." If you have this option, select it, and web pages will automatically shrink down to fit the print page size.

2. If you don't have the "shrink to fit" option, simply print the web pages in landscape mode. Click the option to print the page, and when the print screen pops up, select the "layout" tab and choose landscape mode. Now your pages will print out correctly.

**E-mail Space Limitations

Email space is limited to 100MB. This number can be slightly increased by the IT accounts administrator upon request. However, the increase must be for educational use and the account must be consistently purged of old mail.

Here's how to determine how much space is being occupied by your email account. Go to http://www.lclark. edu/infotech/CONNECTIONS/ check.html. Put in your email username and password.

You will get a reply similar to this:

---------------------------------------------------------
Total disk space used: 68 MB. (Disk Space Limit: 100 MB)

Your INBOX is using 4 MB.

The following directories are at least 1 MB in size. Your 'mail' directory contains all mail folders EXCEPT your inbox. The total of this section added to the size of your inbox (above) should equal your total space used (within 1 MB).

Your mail directory is using 48 MB.
Your .spamassassin directory is using 4 MB.
Your ftp directory is using 3 MB.
You have 8 MB in other areas

The following files are at least 3 MB in size. Mailboxes are stored as a single file and are typically listed in this section. You may also have files that have been transferred to your account via ftp or uploaded to your web space (cwis directory).

File /mail/spam is using 3 MB.
---------------------------------------------------------

What does this mean? If the total of your inbox exceeds 200KB OR your total saved messages (the last line) is approaching 90000KB OR if you have more than 200 messages total in your inbox, please be sure to clean out your mail box. If the mailbox quota is exceeded, incoming messages will bounce. And this certainly will happen on a weekend, late at night, or when a large document is expected. In addition, a large number of message requires longer to open (especially a concern if using a modem line off campus) or may cause the email program to become corrupt.

**Can't delete an email message or it keeps coming back?

There are several possibilities here. The first is the size of your inbox. If your inbox is over 400KB, file the excess messages into folders or delete them (this was covered in earlier TIPS).

NOTE: Having 500, 1000, or more messages (or large attachments) in your inbox may corrupt your profile and cause you to lose *all* your email (and this has happened!). Please keep it purged to 400KB.

If you still can't delete messages, it could be that you have another session open. A second session may have started if you were disconnected while on-line but the reasons for a second session aren't always that clear.

Click on Start
Click on Run
Type in telnet lclark.edu
At the login prompt, type in your email login name
At the password prompt, type in your email password
At the % prompt, type in pine.

Near the top, there will be a dark border. Look near the right side for the word "Folder". If the word "Folder" is preceeded by (READONLY), there is another session open. You will not be able to delete messages until this problem is cleared. The extra session will, in time, disconnect itself. However, Computing Services can "kill" the session and you won't lose any email. Call x6644 for assistance.

NOTE: To exit pine, press Q (for quit). At the % prompt, type in logout. Acknowledge the message box and then click on the "X" to close.
