Technical Instructions for Paperless Exams – CD users
In order to participate in the program allowing you to turn in your exam on a CD without printing it out, you must follow the procedures below for "Creating the CD" and "Creating The Template." You should also be familiar with the Registrar's General Instructions for Paperless Exams.
You must be able to create (burn) a CD using the program on your computer for data (not video or media). You will need to create the template for the header and footer, save the exam to the CD and subsequently check to be sure the exam is on the CD. It is imperative to take the time to understand and follow all the instructions before the exam period starts. NOTE: Failure to follow instructions can result in printing difficulties or produce an unreadable CD. Students assume the risk of an unreadable exam when they choose the paperless exam program.
Creating the CD
You must be familiar enough with your computer and software to be able to correctly create a CD that is readable by the person who will be printing out the exam on a PC. If you do not understand how to do this on your computer, do not attempt this procedure. This is especially important because we cannot provide specific instructions for all the various software programs. Pick up a CD sleeve (jacket) from the Registrar's office to put on your CD. The CD sleeve will have a label on it. Put your exam number, class name and professor's name on the label where indicated. CD users will follow all other PC users instructions.
Creating the Template
A template must be created and placed on every page of your exam. The template consists of the following:
• At the TOP of each page of your answer, put: exam number, date, class name and professor’s name.
• At the BOTTOM of each page put the symbol for the page number.
PC users may save exams only in Word Perfect or Word. Macintosh users may save only in Word. The instructions below will work to allow you to create the template required above. These instructions are for newer versions of this software. If you have an older version of either software, please perform the necessary steps to create the required header and footer.

It is a good idea to have your template created and ready to use PRIOR to the exam period.
Taking the Exam and Turning it In
Saving of examinations to disks or CDs is a two step process that is critical and is your responsibility to complete.
Step One: Saving the document during the exam:
You are obligated and encouraged to save your exam to your hard drive until the exam is over AND you know that the document can be opened and read from the floppy diskette or CD.
When you have finished your exam:
CD’s: (DO NOT SAVE your document to your CD drive while in your word processing software. This will NOT BURN your CD but will merely put the document in the CD cache.)
1. Save the document to your hard drive.
2. Close your word processing software.
3. Open your CD burning software for data (not video).
4. Browse to your document and burn the document to your CD following the instructions for your specific software.
5. After the burning process is finished, close your burning software and eject the CD.
6. Re-insert the CD.
7. Re-open the exam document from the CD. This insures that the document can be read from the CD. ***If the document cannot be read, try another CD and repeat steps 1 - 7.
*** If this process does not work correctly, consult the Registrar immediately.
8. Finally, close the document on the CD and take out the CD, put the CD in the sleeve and put it in the exam envelope.
