Sports Law Seminar: Emerging Issues


Description:

This course explores the role of law and policy in resolving cutting edge issues in sports, including the following: (1) the legal right to work and remedies for athletes denied early entry to professional ranks and the corresponding legality of the barriers to entry imposed by the NCAA and professional sports franchises; this necessarily includes examination of (2) the legal relationship among athletes, the NCAA its member institutions, and the professional sports franchises; (3) the myths, reality and possible hypocrisy related to amateur athletics; (4) state and federal legislative acts (e.g. Professional and Amateur Sports protection Act); (5) the future sports landscape, including legal remedies for increasing violence among players and fans; and (6) the role of the law in the international growth of the industry. Students will be challenged to apply innovative thinking in framing problems, assessments and solutions in these areas while learning the legal underpinnings for the industry and entities involved.

Note: Students who have taken Paul Ehrlich’s Sports Law Seminar may not take this seminar.
