School of Law Law School Registrar Course Schedule Comp. Crim Law/Proced Course Description

CJ: Comparative Criminal Law & Procedure Seminar *

Description:

This seminar will compare the history, jurisprudence, and specific practices of the criminal justice system in the United States with the system in England and with the “Continental” model used in western Europe, Latin America, and much of the rest of the world. To establish a context, we will also compare some aspects of substantive criminal law and legal education, as well as look briefly at approaches used in non-Western systems (such as Middle-Eastern countries and Japan). Students will become “experts” on the system of a particular country and will be responsible for participating in a group presentation on specific issues and practices. A limited number of students will be able to write "A" papers with the prior approval of the instructor. The remaining students will write two short papers on assigned topics, and successful completion of these will fulfill the “B” writing requirement.

Meets A or B writing requirement.

* Typically offered every other year
