School of Law Law School Registrar Course Schedule CIS: Intellectual Property

Clinical Internship Seminar: Intellectual Property

Description:

Limit: 10 students total (in conjunction with CIS: Corporate Counsel)

Enrollment in this seminar is limited, with preference given to students who have completed at least two years of law school. Students will attend a weekly two-hour seminar. These seminar sessions will usually be combined with students enrolled in the Corporate Counsel Internship class. The seminar will concentrate on contract drafting exercises and discussions pertaining to the work of corporate counsel. Students will also work a minimum of 10 hours per week in corporate counsel offices of organizations whose business relates primarily to intellectual property and, as part of the internship experience, will be expected to draft a written product demonstrating an understanding of contract drafting in the context of transactions concerning intellectual property.

Corporate counsel are attorneys who are employees of their organizations. Most corporate law departments within the greater Portland area are not large enough to have attorneys who specialize in a given area of the law. Local attorneys working "in house" usually are generalists. Attorneys working for intellectual property based businesses, however, need to address the intellectual property issues associated with the business in addition to such diverse areas of the law as employment, compliance with government regulations (including securities regulations), international transactions, real estate, environmental, and tax.

Enrollment in this seminar will be limited. Applicants for this seminar will be screened through an interview process and will be required to attend a two hour preliminary seminar in the fall that will take the place of one spring class. To apply, submit a resume and cover letter to the Registrar bythe deadline for registration.

Students shall not be compensated for work performed in connection with a CIS placement.
