Clinical Internship Seminar: Animal Law

The Animal Law Clinical Internship Seminar provides students with an opportunity to work with Portland animal law attorneys and organizations in order to gain a better understanding of the practice of animal law. Each placement provides different experiences and opportunities: students may write a number of short essays on a variety of animal law topics, research cutting-edge areas of animal law, write amicus briefs for animal law cases to be used on a national basis, compile existing state and federal statues, draft model language for state legislation, or assist an attorney on a local animal law case.

Students will be placed with attorneys and will meet weekly with the professors to discuss issues related to their placement and to the field of animal law. Students must work a minimum of 10 hours per week in their placement, and attend a weekly two-hour class with the professors. Students must develop a written product during their internship experience. Student placements include: the Anti-Cruelty Division of the Animal Legal Defense Fund and Geordie Duckler, LLC.

This is a 3 credit course, graded on a credit/no credit basis, and the class size is limited to six students. Interested students must contact Laura Ireland at lireland@lclark.edu and interview with the professors before enrollment is final.

Students shall not be compensated for work performed in connection with a CIS placement.
