Early Childhood/Elementary Intern Program

Teacher Education Preservice

Lewis & Clark offers two preservice early childhood/elementary licensure cohorts. Both sections prepare teachers to assume leadership roles in linking schools to the community through curriculum development. Although interns progress through the same courses and internship requirements, each cohort builds on a distinctive theme. One cohort emphasizes interdisciplinary science, mathematics, and technology education through "real-world" problem solving. The other cohort emphasizes language and literacy. Interns in this cohort give more in-depth attention to language and literacy development and to children's literature across the curriculum. This 12-13 month program is 40 semester hours and begins in mid-June of each year.

In the cohort with a science, math, and technology theme, interns transfer insights gained from a field-based, ecology-oriented practicum to their school placement sites. This link between community and classroom engages children in the study of a real-world problem that challenges them to contribute their solutions to community issues. One option for interns in this cohort is to complete an internship at Catlin Gabel School, which provides a stipend for their work at the school. Interns prepare for an initial license to teach in an elementary school at two levels, age 3 to grade 4 (level one) and grades 3-8 (level two).
