Graduate School Teacher Education Prospective Students Program Description

Inservice Program Options
(Currently Licensed Teachers)

Inservice programs are designed for individuals who already hold a teacher's certificate and who wish to engage in advanced study to expand their professional abilities.

Master of Arts in Teaching: Liberal Studies Degree
The Master's of Arts in Teaching(M.A.T.) in Liberal Studies Program is designed for teachers and individuals who seek advanced study in the liberal arts and in education, but do not necessarily want to link their study to a teaching license. This program is also appropriate for out-of-state teachers seeking a master's degree, elementary teachers, language and literacy or reading endorsement candidates, ESOL/Bilingual endorsement candidates, and teachers in private schools or community colleges.

With the assistance of a Lewis & Clark faculty adviser, program participants can craft a course of study that meets their individual needs and professional goals. Teacher education course offerings are diverse and plentiful. Along with subject area specializations, students in this program have the option to explore such areas as writing, science and environmental studies, and education reform. Students may also choose a course of study that allows them to study a broad range of subjects. Program participants also have the option of earning an endorsement or an Oregon continuing teaching license while participating in the program.

Master of Education With Special Educator Endorsement
Lewis & Clark offers an M.Ed. degree with a Special Educator Endorsement for candidates who seek to earn a degree with a focus on k-12 students who have special behavioral and academic needs.

Continuing Teaching License
Teachers who have received an Initial Oregon Teaching License must complete a state-approved CTL program and master's degree by the end of their sixth year of teaching. The Lewis & Clark program allows candidates to plan individualized programs of study with a faculty advisor. They may select from an array of subject-area and education courses and plan individual research projects to meet their goals for professional development.

ESOL / Bilingual Endorsement
Developed with leading ESOL/bilingual educators from public schools and Lewis & Clark College, the ESOL/bilingual endorsement is available to teachers and administrators holding an Oregon teacher's license, and teachers needing the ESOL/bilingual endorsement, which is required beginning in January 1999. The endorsement program involves 13 semester hours of study plus a 2-semester-hour practicum, and can be combined with an M.A.T. in liberal studies. Students with extensive experience and expertise in ESOL/bilingual education may be able to waive coursework by completing a seminar to document professional experience. The seminar is offered each semester.

Language and Literacy Program
Reading Endorsement

The Language and Literacy program builds on the belief that language, in all its richness of form and function, is the foundation from which effective literacy evolves. The program takes an integrated and holistic approach to the teaching of the language processes of reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Teachers and students develop flexible strategies to support the construction of meaning from text. Courses in the Language and Literacy program lead to an initial reading endorsement, allowing candidates to specialize in language and literacy at all four levels (age 3 to grade 12) and teach reading in grades K-12.

Mathematics Endorsement
Two programs of study and practicum are offered: the Advanced Mathematics endorsement is designed for individuals preparing to teach high school and the Basic Mathematics endorsement is for individuals preparing to teach at the middle level (through Algebra I). Both programs meet all State of Oregon requirements and guidelines. Because there are multiple paths to obtaining the background in mathematics required for each program, applications for admission, including transcripts, are assessed on a case-by-case basis.

Non-admitted Students

With Special Student Status, individuals may take degree-applicable credit prior to formal admission to the Graduate School of Education and Counseling. (Special Student Status does not guarantee formal admission to the Graduate School of Education and Counseling.) Please refer to each program's individual policies.
