Practicum
The Lewis and Clark College Special Educator Program Practicum is SPED 544. Two credits of practicum are required to complete the endorsement. Each credit is a minimum of 90 hours of school-based experience covering all aspects of the special education process, Referral, Evaluation, Eligibility, IEP, Placement, including curriculum and instruction to improve student outcomes. One credit of practicum is taken during the Fall semester in conjunction with SPED 513, Assessment & Diagnosis. The second credit of practicum is taken during the spring semester in conjunction with SPED 514 Curriculum & Instruction. Students will record practicum hours and Lewis & Clark faculty will observe practica to support candidates skill development in special education. Teachers who are not currently teaching (but have an Oregon teaching license) can work with college faculty to obtain a practicum site in a special education setting. Endorsement Authorization Level
Oregon Administrative Regulations require that teachers earning a special educator endorsement complete two hours of practicum work. This work must be completed while working with students in the grades levels for which the endorsement will be granted. The special educator endorsement is given at ECE/EL EL/Middle/ Middle/High . A candidate who wishes to add another endorsement level must hold or be eligible for a special education endorsement and complete a 90hr. practicum at the new authorization level.
