Nationally-recognized author Mark Herrmann (The Curmudgeon's Guide to Practicing Law) will join local senior partners and the legal writing faculty to talk with law firm associates about clear writing. The local senior partners include Steve Blackhurst (Ater Wynne), Paul Conable (Tonkon Torp), Randy Foster (Stoel Rives), Margaret Kushner (Stoel Rives), and Lisa Rackner (McDowell & Rackner).

9:15 - 10:15 The Curmudgeon Speaks (author Mark Herrmann)
10:15 Break
10:30 - 11:15 Session I: Keeping the Curmudgeon Happy: How to Organize and Communicate Legal Analysis Clearly
Bill Chin, Legal Writing Professor
11:15 - 12:00 Practicing for Practice (break out into small groups to apply the writing points discussed in Session I)
12:00 - 12:45pm Lunch
12:45 - 2:15 Portland's "Curmudgeons" Speak (partners from several Portland law firms and author Mark Herrmann assess written work by law firm associates)

The Portland "curmudgeons" include Steve Blackhurst (Ater Wynne), Paul Conable (Tonkon Torp), Randy Foster (Stoel Rives), Margaret Kushner (Stoel Rives), and Lisa Rackner (McDowell & Rackner). The moderator is Prof. Lia Miles.

5.5 General MCLE Credits (Please note: Those attending the breakout session entitled "Writing in Crayon and Other Bad Ideas: Ethical Issues in Writing" at 2:30 p.m. will receive 1.25 ethics credits instead of general credits.)
