Ad Hoc ("Contract") Work List

Attorneys from the Portland metropolitan area frequently contact the Career Services Office with research and other law-related projects. We provide an opportunity for students and alums to do these projects by signing up on the "Ad Hoc List". Sign up sheets are available on the first working day of each month. To sign up on the list, you must have a current registration on file with the Career Services Office and each month you must submit a resume. As employers call with projects, we contact students and alums on the list. This is an excellent way for students and alums to gain experience, and get referrals from attorneys throughout the year.

Alumni Network

Career Services maintains a list of alumni in many geographic locations throughout the United States, including information about their substantive practice areas, whether the alum had a judicial clerkship and with which judge, etc. Alumni who want to practice in an area outside of Portland, can be put in contact with these alumni.

Business Cards

Lewis & Clark students may obtain business cards through the law school. To order, you must fill out an order form and prepay through the Career Services Office. See the office for current pricing information and details.

Career Counseling & Planning

Because your career is such an integral part of your life, and you have invested so much, we believe that it is very important for us to offer our students and alumni ongoing assistance with career planning. We are available to do individual career counseling, give you pointers on your job search, assist with mock interviews, help with networking contacts, and help you research the best employment situation for you, whether it be working in a traditional "lawyer" job, or in an "alternative" career using your J.D. We can help you develop the skills you need to conduct successful interviews, to cultivate contacts, and to recognize the strengths and experience you bring to a particular employer. We recognize that your needs change over time, and we are available to meet with you as needed. Click here for staff contact information.

Career Services Handbook

The Career Services Office of Lewis & Clark Law School offers students and alumni one of the most comprehensive handbooks of any law school in the country. During your first year, you should have received a binder with over 8 chapters containing valuable, up-to-date information on application materials, interviewing, how to survive your summer clerkship, on-campus interviewing, and much more. This handbook should be a valuable tool throughout your law school career and beyond.

Fax, Resume Paper, Computers and Phone

State-of-the-art laser printers and computers are available in the Career Services Office for students and alums to print professional-quality resumes and cover letters. Also available is a free telephone available for telephone interviews or long-distance employment related calls. Several types of resume paper and envelopes are available for purchase at cost. We also will fax application materials for you.

Job Postings

Our office receives numerous job postings for student and graduate positions, from legal employers in Oregon and from around the country. All current job postings can be accessed through the Career Services website. The current week's jobs are also posted on our bulletin board outside the office, as well as in the job posting notebooks located in the Career Services Resource Library. Students and alumni can access the website job postings with a password available from the office. Please contact the office either by phone or e-mail to request the current password.

Reciprocity

The Career Services Office of Lewis & Clark Law School has established reciprocal agreements with the career services offices of many other ABA-accredited law schools around the country. These agreements allow students and graduates to use the other schools' career services' offices when seeking permanent or summer employment in another geographical location. Reciprocity policies vary from school to school, so it is important to check in with the Career Services Office at least two weeks prior to your departure, so that you are clear about a particular school's policy and so we can write you the necessary letter of introduction. Reciprocity is generally closed at all law schools from August 1 through November 30. Lewis and Clark's Reciprocity Policy.

Resource Library

The Career Services Office maintains an extensive resource library for our students and alumni. Nearly 500 separate references are available, both in our office and in the law library "career" section. In addition to books and periodicals, there are numerous videos and online podcasts available for review, featuring career panels in a myriad of substantive areas. In addition, the office maintains "in house" resources, such as biographical information on state and local judges. Many of these materials can be checked out.

Resume & Application Material Review

Students and alumni can hand deliver, email, or fax resumes, and other application materials, to the Career Services Office for review. The Assistant Dean, Director, or Public Interest Law Coordinator will review your materials, make notes, give you written feedback, and return them to you, usually within 24 hours. We will be happy to review your materials as often as you wish. During our especially busy seasons (during on-campus interviews in the fall and right after classes begin again in the spring) it is best to get your materials in as early as possible before any deadlines to allow ample time for review and feedback.

Videoconferencing

Lewis & Clark now has two options for on campus videoconference interviewing. The Law School is a member of Law School Connect, a videoconferencing service that allows students to interview with any law firm, legal non-profit or judge that is also a Law School Connect member. Non-member employers may also use this service for a fee. For a list of current employer members, see the Law School Connect Website. In addition, Career Services has an in-house videoconferencing system. To arrange for a videoconferenced interview through either of these systems, contact the Career Services Office.
