Ethnomusicology/World Music Major
World Music
Students at Lewis & Clark can study West African drumming and dancing,
or learn the art of the Javanese court gamelan. Lewis & Clark houses an
African marimba ensemble and offers instruction in other traditional music from
around the globe, from North Indian sitar and tabla to African mbira and Japanese
shamisen. Every semester the students will have the opportunity to perform on
campus in the ensembles of their choice, thus sharing their experiences with
the rest of the campus community.
Studies in ethnomusicology at Lewis & Clark College may be undertaken as
a focus for music majors, or may fulfill a credit requirement for non-majors
in the creative arts. These courses investigate the various musical systems
as well as their cultural context, their meanings, their histories, their functions
in the life of a society.
