Northwest Writing Institute
The Northwest Writing Institute gathers a community of writers for reflective experiences in the practice of writing. As part of the Lewis & Clark Graduate School, the Institute offers courses for teachers and adult writers.
As part of our devotion to the literary community of the region, the NWI supports the annual Fishtrap Writers Gathering, which brings together writers, publishers, teachers, librarians and editors from across the country.

Fall 2007
Founded in 1986, the NWI has a long history of providing courses in writing and cultural inquiry to students at the Graduate School, and to writers in the community. This past year, our program has been restructured, as reported in the following message to our long-standing students and friends….
Dear Friends of the Northwest Writing Institute:
We want to let you know where we stand. Due to a groundswell of support on and off campus (thank you for your letters!), we are going forward even as our work changes.
Kim Stafford and Joanne Mulcahy will be teaching writing, and working with a committee to develop new NWI courses for writers and teachers. We are starting with a kernel of what we have done in the past, and inventing anew. We welcome your thoughts in support of this effort. Watch for new offerings as we evolve, and take a class!
Some changes: The William Stafford Center has closed, Diane McDevitt is no longer part of our team, and we have closed our program office. But the Northwest Writing Institute as a smaller program is continuing with heartfelt support. We will not be offering as many classes as in the past, but we will be pouring our best energy into the classes we do offer.
You can find our courses and chart our progress by visiting this site, and you can register for our courses by using the registration link on our site or visit the Center for Continuing Studies site.
We still believe the most important literature of our time is the unwritten, and that each writer has an essential voice and set of stories to contribute to this work. We will find ways to work together for the healing of the world.
Our best to all of you,
Kim Stafford (krs@lclark.edu)
Joanne Mulcahy (mulcahy@lclark.edu)
