Writing Culture: Language of Clothing with Joanne Mulcahy
Saturdays, April 12 and 19, 9am - 5pm
A 1960's tie-dyed t-shirt, a working woman's power suit, a teenager's baggy pants, all convey important cultural messages. Clothing is a system of changing signs and symbols through which we communicate social meaning and individual expression. In this workshop, we'll write from memories rooted in things: the feel of wool sweater, the smell of hot iron on a cotton shirt, the mustiness of dress in the attic. We'll also explore the language of clothing through reading literary and cultural classics. We'll find the places where cultural messages connect to our own experiences of "love, loss and what we wore." The workshop will include a Saturday afternoon visit to a Portland Goodwill store.
