Welcome to the Fall 2007 schedule of College Outdoors trips. Please note that this list is updated frequently throughout the semester. Trips here are open to Lewis & Clark College students (undergrad, graduate, and law), faculty, staff, alumni, and their guests only. Please contact our office for more details on any of these trips. Friday, September 14 to Sunday, September 16
Waldo Lake Service Project
Signup Begins: Friday, August 31
Imagine floating on water so clear it looks like you're flying! Waldo Lake, perched at an elevation of over 5,000 feet in the Willamette National Forest, is one of Oregon's largest natural lakes. On this trip we'll kayak across the lake to work with the Forest Service on service projects, like repairing their winter shelter and stocking wood. On Sunday we'll explore this beautiful body of water by sea kayak.

Mt. St. Helens Backpack
Signup Begins: Friday, August 31
Explore the trails of the Northwest's most active volcano, and observe close-up the aftermath of the 1980 eruption, and the area's natural recovery. Backpack through islands of old growth forest, which remain shielded from the volcano's fury by lucky geographic placement, to a nearby lake on Friday. From there you'll continue to discover great views and stunning scenery at this national monument, known as Loowit to the Native Americans.

Deschutes Rafting #1
Signup Begins: Friday, August 31
Central Oregon's Deschutes features seven major rapids in twelve miles, making this one of the premier rafting rivers in the state. You will get wet, and you need to paddle hard! This trip is not recommended for nonswimmers, although you'll be led by experienced guides and everyone has to wear a PFD on the river - safety is paramount and so is an awesome time!

Deschutes Rafting #2

New! Kayak Lacamas Lake
Signup Begins: Friday, September 7
Named for the camas plant whose flowers were admired by Lewis & Clark, and whose roots were used by Native Americans for bread, Lacamas Lake, Washington, is a surprisingly wild 12-mile-long lake just north of the Portland metro area. Join us as we explore this scenic stretch of water, as well as nearby Round Lake. We'll also paddle up some beautiful wetlands in the upper reaches of Lacamas Creek, experiencing a bit of the Everglades in the Northwest! We'll be on the lookout for native populations of beavers, osprey, and eagles, and enjoy a day paddling and exploring, seemingly far from campus and its stresses.

Oregon Coast Hike

On the Central Oregon Coast lies an area of huge Sitka trees, ferns, cascading streams and waterfalls. We'll hike through old growth forest to a secluded bay, where we can observe marine life. The six-mile round trip hike traverses some of the most productive rainforest on earth, showcasing Oregon's natural treasures.

Indian Heaven Dayhike

This sub-alpine environment just north of the Columbia River Gorge is dotted with dozens of fascinating lakes. Fall colors will brighten the trailside, featuring unbeatable views of Mt. Adams, Mt. St. Helens, Mt. Rainier, and Mt. Hood. We'll thoroughly explore the areas many trails and peaks, then relax by the lakes of the high plateau.

This clinic establishes an understanding of the tools and basic navigation skills required for outdoor exploration. The knowledge you gain can form an important part of your leadership development, and is useful for anyone who loves to take outdoor trips.

FALL BREAK--Raft Guide Clinic
Signup Begins: Friday, September 14
This clinic is the first step to becoming a professional guide, for those of you who'd like to captain a whitewater raft. You'll learn technical knowledge and gain valuable experience in the art of running rivers, at a fraction of the cost of similar courses run by other groups. Takes place on the Maupin section of the Deschutes, at Wapinitia, Box Car, and Oak Springs rapids.

FALL BREAK! Crater Lake and Redwoods National Parks #1
Signup Begins: Friday, September 7
Join us for this amazing tour of the natural wonders of the Pacific Northwest. First spend a day at Crater Lake National Park, as long as there isn't too much snow. Then gaze in wonder at the tallest living things on earth, as you hike the trails of the amazing Redwood National Park, at the southern Oregon / northern Californian border. We'll stay in cabins, or you have the option to camp out on this trip. This trip will meet at 3:30 pm on Wednesday for people who get out of class early and want to beat the traffic!

Thousands of years ago the lava from a spectacular volcanic eruption created these caves, at the base of Mt. Adams. These awesome natural formations stay relatively dry and at a constant temperature of about 50', making them perfect for spelunking.

Black River Kayak
Signup Begins: Friday, September 28
Come explore this unique wetland and river near Chehalis, Washington, home to many species of bird, reptile, and mammal. This slow-moving river has been described as better suited to the South than to the Northwest, and is the focus of intense preservation efforts by the Nature Conservancy. Its twisting, wooded course will provide you with the perfect escape from dull October studying. Fall colors are beautiful here, especially if we're lucky enough to have a sunny day. (If the weather is really bad, we'll cancel the trip and give everyone their money back.)

Oregon has an enormous number of mushroom species--no wonder, with all this rain! And as long as you're living here, and since they taste so good, you might as well be introduced to some of them. On this clinic, we'll camp out Friday night and spend Saturday searching a coastal forest outside Portland, for all sorts of fascinating fungi, culminating in a mouth-watering feast (weather permitting).

Ancient Forest Clinic
Signup Begins: Friday, October 19
Study the plants, animals, and fungi of the temperate rainforest, and uncover the issues and challenges facing the preservation of this fragile ecosystem. Hike the ancient forests and gorgeous rainforests of the Oregon Coast by day, then stay in warm, dry yurts at night!

Sea Kayak Advanced Skills Clinic
Signup Begins: Friday, October 19
Improve on your current skills, paddle under adverse conditions, learn about leadership and how to teach others to kayak. We tackle challenging wind and waves by the time the weekend is out (weather permitting), and we guarantee you'll learn a lot. This clinic takes place at various lakes and bays on the Oregon coast, and we'll be staying in dry yurts at night. Prerequisites: You must know how to swim, and you should have been kayaking, canoeing, or other paddling before. You should have reasonable upper body strength.

Come join us on an excursion to see some of the Gorge's lesser known falls, and take in the autumn scenery. The natural power and beauty of these waterfalls has to be seen to be believed. Plus, getting there is half the fun - we'll roam the trails of the Gorge with plenty of time to stop and enjoy the view. Everyone loves a waterfall, so sign up early!

Beginning Cross-Country Ski
Signup Begins: Friday, November 16
This is a one-day trip to Mt. Hood for beginning cross-country skiers. After a beginning ski skills clinic we will head out to explore the surrounding ski trails and practice the techniques we've learned. The trip fee includes transportation, instruction, and ski equipment. Take advantage of this great deal!

Snowshoe Mt. Hood
Signup Begins: Friday, November 16
Downhill skiing at Mt. Hood is $40 just for the lift ticket. Help your budget -- head up to Mt. Hood to explore winter on snowshoes. Weather permitting, we'll head up one of the trails in the open east-side forests and meadows on Mt. Hood. Snowshoeing takes a fair amount of energy, but it is great exercise and not hard to learn.
