College of Arts and Sciences College Outdoors Breakaway Adventures

Welcome to New Student Breakaway Adventures!

NST 2008

College Outdoors and the Office of Community and Career Connections send you greetings from beautiful Portland, Oregon. Every year we offer new students an opportunity to launch their Lewis & Clark collegiate career in an enjoyable way. The Breakaway Adventures happen just before the college-wide New Student Orientation held in the fall. This year College Outdoors will sponsor many adventures, and team up with the Office of Community and Career Connections to offer the Urban Action and Rural Action service trips. These trips are great opportunities to get a head start on meeting new friends and to familiarize yourself with the diverse environment of the Pacific Northwest. The usual excitement and uncertainty associated with arriving at a new place is much easier to manage after spending some time with a group of new students who will often become your best friends.

No Experience Needed!

Every trip we offer is suitable for people with no background in the outdoors (or service, in the case of our service projects). The adventures are led by competent and experienced outdoor leaders and the service projects by strong leaders in those fields. The trip fee covers transportation, food, guides, and all equipment.

These trips fill up fast, so register as soon as possible! Students who go on Breakaway Adventures will return in time to participate in New Student Orientation on campus.

What is College Outdoors?

College Outdoors, started in 1979, is one of the largest outdoor programs of any college our size in North America. Few students graduate without joining us on trips during their academic careers. These trips include cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, igloo building, hiking, backpacking, mushrooming, whitewater rafting, sea kayaking, swiftwater rescue and guide training to name a few!

What is (CCC)?

The Office of Community and Career Connections (CCC) is a place where Lewis & Clark students are able to link with community organizations and other students involved in service. CCC provides a variety of long- and short-term service opportunities ranging from tutoring and serving shelter meals to renovating vacant buildings for low-income housing. Last year, over 650 students gave back to the community through service activities.

What is the purpose of these trips?

The New Student Trips are designed to help students in their transition to life at Lewis & Clark, whether they are coming from high school or another college. Students have a great opportunity to form a core group of friends before they head into the fast-paced experience of moving into the residence halls and starting classes. First and foremost, we want participants to have FUN on these trips. We incorporate programs which are designed to enhance decision making skills, inspire group communication, and spark discussions on issues facing college students. These trips seek to build community, increase an individual1s confidence and give participants an appreciation for people with diverse backgrounds. Time has shown that these trips truly enrich students' Lewis & Clark experience starting from day one.

Paper copies of the brochures will be mailed after May 5th to those students who have accepted and paid their deposit to Lewis & Clark College.

If you have any questions please call us at 503-768-7116.
