Skate Ski Clinic 1
Signup Begins: Friday, December 7

If you already know how to rollerblade or ice-skate, you can pick up skate skiing in no time! Come give it a try with our new skate ski equipment! We have everything you need, at no extra rental charge. You’ll learn on the groomed tracks at the Teacup Lake Nordic Center on the east side of Mt. Hood. These trails are groomed each weekend by the Oregon Nordic Club. Since the area is well marked, once you learn the basics, you can go at your own pace and ski whatever loops you choose. For more information, stop by our office in Templeton. We plan to offer more clinics depending on interest.

The weekend will be facilitated by two experienced Outward Bound instructors who are also practitioners of Zazen meditation and have taught yoga before. On Friday evening, after classes, we’ll go to the Oregon coast and stay in yurts; we’ll return by Sunday afternoon. Come relax, unwind, and join us on this new, unique College Outdoors trip. No prior yoga or meditation experience necessary.

Friday, March 21 to Sunday, March 30
Spring Break: Grand Canyon Service
Signup Begins: Friday, December 7
Volunteer for the Grand Canyon Trust as they try to rehabilitate a canyon on the border of Grand Canyon National Park. We expect to hike up to 10 miles per day doing a survey of populations of tamarisk trees, an invasive plant that is taking over streamside corridors here. The Trust wants to see how widespread these invaders are, and eradicate them. We plan to do this work by backpacking into Paria Canyon, one of the world’s largest slot canyons near the national park. As with any field work, expect changeable weather conditions and the possibility of needing to switch to a different project. We plan to fly in and out of Salt Lake City for this trip. The trip fee includes airfare, food, equipment, etc.

Friday, March 21 to Friday, March 28
Spring Break: California Redwoods Hike & Backpack
Signup Begins: Friday, January 25
Come stay in a cozy lodge in Redwood National Park for Spring Break! We’ll spend most of the week doing day hikes through huge redwood forests and hikes along the beaches on the stunning Pacific Ocean. It’s spring in these spectacular forests, so the wildflowers will be popping up. Each night we’ll be able to sit by the fire in the lodge and make dinner in a huge kitchen. If people are excited to do a one or two night backpack trip in the park, we’ll do that, too. The main lodge has cabins next to it for everyone to sleep in, and hot showers, too. Redwoods are the tallest living things in the world, don’t miss this opportunity to live among them for a week! You can get one credit in PEA 101, Section 14, as “Outdoor Adventures” for going on this trip, which counts as an activity credit for graduation. Be sure to sign up by the end of the drop and add period if you want credit.

Friday, April 4 to Saturday, April 5
Swiftwater Rescue Class 1
Signup Begins: Friday, February 15
This advanced class covers a variety of techniques to employ if you or the people you are with get into a predicament on a river. Paddling skills are only part of the education you need to do watersports safely, and knowing what to do in an emergency can save your life or the lives of the people in your party. Similar clinics cost $300 or more! This one trip is spread over two weekends so you can have Sundays free. The Fri. evening classes (Apr. 4 & 11 from 4:30-6 PM) are followed by a day Sat. field sessions (Apr. 5 & 12). Class 1 of 2

Sunday, April 6 to Sunday, April 6
Hike Hardesty Ridge 1

Join us for this great hike along a newly completed trail in the western Columbia Gorge! On this somewhat strenuous hike, we’ll follow a route through alder and Douglas-fir forests, climbing up to amazing views of the Gorge. This hike is in close proximity to the iconic Beacon Rock. We expect to hike about 7 miles and gain 2100 feet in elevation, but the payoff is definitely worth the effort.

Friday, April 11 to Saturday, April 12
Swiftwater Rescue Class 2
Signup Begins: Friday, February 15
This one trip is spread over two weekends so you can have Sundays free. The Fri. evening classes (Apr. 4 & 11 from 4:30-6 PM) are followed by a day Sat. field sessions (Apr. 5 & 12). Class 2 of 2

Columbia Gorge Off-Trail Backpack
Signup Begins: Friday, March 7
Leave campus after brunch on Saturday, and be back Sunday afternoon to study! This trip traverses the meadows and oak woodlands in the drier part of the Columbia Gorge. Much of the route is off-trail, as there are no maintained trails in most of this area. We’ll teach map and compass skills and GPS. Spring is in full bloom in the Gorge by this time in April, with wildflowers popping up all over. There are some ticks, poison oak, and the occasional rattlesnake to watch out for, but folks who tackle the elevation gain of this hike do so among some absolutely spectacular scenery. Since the rainfall this far east is minimal, plenty of sunny skies are expected.

Sunday, April 13 to Sunday, April 13

Signup Begins: Friday, March 7
Join us to sea kayak on one of Washington’s reservoirs under the shadow of Mt. Saint Helens. Summer 08 Utah Canyoneering

As the course progresses, your experienced instructors will step back and turn more of the decision-making over to the group. This course also includes one climbing session, in the Portland area during the spring semester, to get us fired up for the trip. Transportation options include leaving May 14 and drive with the instructors to Utah and returning to Portland, May 26 (included in trip cost). You may also choose to travel independently to Salt Lake City or Moab, Utah, meet the instructors on May 15 and we’ll drop you off in Utah, at the end of the course, on May 25.
