Print Publications at Lewis & Clark
It's important that Lewis & Clark's printed materials--especially those intended for primary external audiences--present an image consistent with the high quality of the institution. As stewards of Lewis & Clark's strategic communications plan and visual identity, the publications team is in the best position to help you develop and produce print pieces that meet this objective.
Looking for The Chronicle? What We Do
The primary purpose of the publications team is to guide print projects from conception through editing, design, and printing. Communications intended for Lewis & Clark's primary external audiences are our first priority. Even if your project doesn't fall within this scope, however, we can still help you succeed. Project concept/communications strategy consultation
Do you have a project in mind but don't know where to begin? Are you worried your communications strategy may not be accomplishing its intended goals? We invite you to - Take advantage of our Project Worksheet, a tool designed to help you answer critical questions about your communications needs.
- Contact us at pubcom@lclark.edu for a consultation.
Our office can help you develop a plan to ensure that your message is conveyed as effectively as possible.
Integrated production
If we determine that your print project falls within the scope of our office, we will work with you to produce your piece. Our process includes the following: - Editing. A professional editor will make sure your text is structurally and stylistically sound, grammatically correct, and persuasive.
- Design. An experienced publications designer will develop a visual presentation that is both compelling and cost-effective.
- Print coordination. The publications team maintains relationships with numerous top-quality printers. We'll make sure you get a great product at a competitive price.
- Photos and illustrations. Public Affairs and Communications maintains a library of visuals that may be appropriate for your publication. Working together, we'll select images that reinforce your messages. Or, we can discuss coordinating a photo shoot. Learn more.
Working With Us
Over time, we have developed a set of procedures that allow us to optimize the institution's resources while producing effective publications in a timely manner. You can find information regarding the publications process and our policies, as well as tips for preparing successful projects, on our FAQ page.
For a typical project, we will ask you to follow these basic steps:
- Request a consultation by contacting us at pubcom@lclark.edu. We will work with you to create a plan for your communication. For the best results, we suggest you complete the Project Worksheet (PDF) beforehand and bring it along. During this meeting we will verify whether your project falls within the scope of Public Affairs and Communications.
- Prepare your text and have it approved, if necessary, by the appropriate supervisor. This is the time to share your text with any other parties who might need to review it.
- Schedule an intake meeting with the publications team, using Meeting Maker.
- Submit copy according to publications guidelines. Be prepared to discuss project details at the intake meeting. (Again, the Project Worksheet (PDF) will help you.)
- Get in touch with us if you will be away from your office. As we edit and design your piece, we may need to contact you if questions or concerns arise.
- Review the layout, or proof, we provide. You and your department are responsible for proofreading and confirming the accuracy of all copy.
- Sign off on your project. (All proofs include an approval stamp for your signature.) Your project cannot go to press until you complete this step.
You will usually receive your piece about one week (or two weeks for four-color projects) after we send files to the printer. Watch for billing. You will receive photocopies of all invoices when we send them to the Business Office for payment.
