Moving forward

Keen Mobility, says company cofounder Jerry Carleton, “began as two guys in a North Portland dining room and now has 14 people working in offices downtown” to provide services and innovative medical devices to the elderly and disabled from Oregon to the Sudan.

Knowing firsthand what it means and what it takes to invest in an idea, a product, or a person, Carleton now pursues expertise in business law as a fourth-year student in the law school’s evening division. He is especially grateful for the generosity and mentorship of donors such as John E. Bates, chair of the Board of Trustees, and Paul H. Casey.

Moving ForwardTo honor his late father, Henry, a much-beloved professor who celebrated education for its capacity to enrich the mind and enhance public service, Paul Casey has contributed funds that support scholarships in business law and public interest law. Recipients are law students whose academic standing and civic engagement reflect Henry Casey’s deep commitment to values, integrity, and character. A similar regard for building a future grounded in ethical values prompted John Bates and his wife, Susan, to establish a business law scholarship. In their generosity and vision, John and Susan Bates and Paul Casey are long-term “co-investors” in the future of Carleton and other scholarship recipients.

Ways of Knowing and Ways of Serving

When knowledge and service intersect, wisdom grows and communities thrive. Students at Lewis & Clark explore knowledge from many perspectives and sources. They also find ways to animate that knowledge and transform values into action by engaging in community service—and doing so as part of rather than apart from their education.
