The transformative power of your gifts
Our Honor Roll of Donors includes all who contributed to Lewis & Clark College’s College of Arts and Sciences, Graduate School of Education and Counseling, or School of Law during the period of June 1, 2004, through May 31, 2005. We present this Honor Roll to acknowledge and thank our many friends and patrons for their financial generosity. We also celebrate their abiding affection for the College and their generosity of spirit, both of which are beyond measuring. Each donor here is an ambassador for Lewis & Clark. Each bears a portfolio of goodwill. Each earns our gratitude and thanks.
All who donate to Lewis & Clark College have a right--even a duty--to expect an accounting of where their money goes, what their contributions fund, what their giving produces. The annual report itself shares specific accomplishments made possible in great part by donor support. The charts on this page show where gift income comes from and where it goes. And the graph on this page shows how the endowment has grown ninefold in the 20-year period ending May 31, 2005.
The growth has occurred while the endowment has distributed $81.5 million in support of Lewis & Clark programs. While donors often designate their gifts for a specific purpose, any contribution we receive invigorates the institution as a whole by sustaining and advancing our mission. That is the great benefit of your gifts: They allow our students to experience a transformative education.
A Lewis & Clark education engenders critical and imaginative thinking, active reading, analytical reasoning, creative expression, transdisciplinary learning, personal development, immersion in diversity, and constant, constant intellectual inquiry.
What emerges from this rigor is an enlarged understanding of self, society, and the world. What emerges is the capacity for original thought and the ability to discover new knowledge, to learn to serve, and to learn to lead. What emerges are agile minds that bring fresh perspectives on complex problems. What emerges are innovative solutions that enhance public life and the common good.
So, to the question "What does education here mean or produce?" we answer: Civic engagement. Ethical decision-making. Enhanced teaching at all levels of education. Civil discourse. Informed social action. Cross-cultural understanding. Scientific inquiry and breakthrough research. Lifelong learning, leadership, and service. All this and more.
And to the question, "What do your gifts to Lewis & Clark produce?" we answer: The next generation of global thinkers and leaders. Teachers, principals, and school counselors. Scientists, doctors, and nurses. Heads of corporations, owners of local businesses, and social entrepreneurs. Social workers, mental health professionals, and healers. Technogeeks and wireless wizards. Advocates, public defenders, and judges. Architects, land use planners, and environmental stewards. Artists, dancers, musicians, writers, and actors. Clergy, spiritual advisers, and religious explorers. Parents. Citizens. All these and more.
Your giving creates an enduring legacy to Lewis & Clark College and to the world at large. In terms of dollars and cents, we can measure what you give. Only you can know what you gain. At the very least, our hope is that you receive what you also give us: affirmation of purpose, a sense of possibility, and a feeling of enlightenment. For all that and more, we thank you.
Growing the endowment--and education--at Lewis & Clark
Gifts to Lewis & Clark College have a dramatic cumulative impact on the endowment. Based on its market performance without additional gifts, the endowment would have doubled from 1985 to 2005. With individual, corporate, foundation, estate, and other gifts plus their market performance, the endowment has actually grown ninefold while distributing $81.5 million in support of Lewis & Clark programs. That makes the power of giving transformative--and makes the difference to scholarships, students, faculty, and academic resources exponential.
