Measurable giving, immeasurable impact

With Giving Voice as the theme of our 2006-07 Annual Report and Honor Roll of Donors, we naturally invite the question: What are you saying when you give to Lewis & Clark?

In a sense, there are as many answers to that question as there are names on the pages that follow. In another sense, there may be just one answer, one that speaks to the essence of who we are: When you give to Lewis & Clark, you are giving first and foremost to a gathering of individuals who form community around a core mission.

That mission, common to our three schools, is to pursue knowledge wherever it may lead; to advance scholarship and understanding across disciplines, barriers, and borders; and to put what we know and what we discover to public benefit and the common good.

Our vibrant campus and robust programs and resources are only as strong, diverse, and vital as the people who are our community. Whether you give to honor the work or memory of a friend, colleague, professor, or mentor; whether you give to sustain and increase the scholarships that make a Lewis & Clark education more accessible to more students; whether you give to strengthen a specific program or enhance a distinct resource; or whether you give with the intent that we direct your contribution to our most critical needs—know that each and every gift works to improve the life and future of many members of the Lewis & Clark community.

As of May 31, 2007, our endowment stood at $224.5 million. This reflects a strong four-year increase from a 2003 value of $119.9 million. The endowment is an important measure of institutional strength at any private institution of higher learning, and especially at Lewis & Clark. As a private college, we do not rely on substantial government funding or public support to underwrite our finances. The strength of our endowment and the generosity of our donors are therefore critical factors in our ability to attend to current needs and make plans for the future.

That is why, when you give, you have a very real impact on educating students, expanding knowledge, and enhancing public life. That is how, when you give, you are giving voice to Lewis & Clark.

Lewis & Clark offers a wide array of opportunities and ways for giving. To learn more about how you can give and the impact of your gifts, visit our institutional giving website.
