Challenge gift: Power from catch to finish

Luella Lilly '59 is a true pioneer--and Pioneer. A multisport athlete, 1988 Lewis & Clark Sports Hall of Fame inductee, Pioneer Athletic Club member, Lewis & Clark Heritage Society member, and the first director of women's athletics at the University of California at Berkeley, she also knows the rewards of pulling together.

In summer 2004, Lilly pledged $12,000 toward the purchase of a new women's 8 shell--if alumni and friends of the College matched her gift. They did, and crew members Breanna Parker '07 (left) and Lucinda Boyce '06 recently joined Lilly in the Pios boathouse on the Willamette River to mark a challenge met and to anticipate christening the Luella Lilly '59 in spring 2006.
