Roosevelt HS students visit campus and their L&C student partners

"I am so glad that I had a chance to participate... I would definitely recommend L&C come up with a permanent program... it helps students feel connected to their community!"

"The relationships we established with the high schoolers were incredible. Great group of students!"

President's Message

Welcome to the academic civic engagement resource site!

We define Civic Engagement as a "course-based, credit-bearing educational experience that allows students to (a) participate in an organized service activity that meets identified community needs and (b) reflect on the service activity in such a way as to gain further understanding of course content, a broader appreciation of the discipline, and an enhanced sense of civic responsibility."

- Bringle & Hatcher, 1995

The civic engagement initiative works to forge connections between the academic curriculum and the Portland community. Through civic engagement projects, students develop an ethic of engagement and civic leadership, while also applying their learning to real-world issues.
