Service Sites
1. JOIN Housing Project
WHAT IS JOIN?
JOIN is a nonprofit organization founded in 1992 to bridge the gap between homeless and housed members of the Portland community.
JOIN envisions a community where homelessness is a short-term circumstance rather than a long-term or chronic condition.
In service to this vision, JOIN utilizes a “Housing First” approach that rapidly re-houses 175 homeless households (families and individuals) in permanent housing annually. Housing stabilization is achieved by providing critical support services to new tenants, and consequently JOIN achieves 12-month retention rates of 80% or better.
WHAT YOU CAN DO:
Come and work with at JOIN's Central Office on a variety of projects that will help make the client experience better. Projects will be hands-on and may involve painting.

2. Book-Moving at Roosevelt High
WHAT IS ROOSEVELT?
Roosevelt High School is located in North Portland and serves a low-income, multi-cultural community. During the normal semester, Lewis & Clark College students go there four times a week to tutor and teach after-school classes of interest.
WHAT YOU CAN DO:
This MLK Day, Lewis & Clark is joining Roosevelt in a “book-moving” event at the high school. You can help move boxes of books to make way for much needed technology for Roosevelt’s students.
Roosevelt’s Principal, Deborah Peterson, sees this project as key to helping her students gain an advantage in their education. “Thank you so much…technology is the gatekeeper for students living in poverty,” she said.

3. The Plaza
WHAT IS THE PLAZA?
Built in 1973 on contaminated land just a block from I-5, Plaza Townhomes is a low-income housing development owned and operated by the Housing Authority of Portland. It is home to dozens of families that must deal with the pollution on a daily basis.
WHAT YOU CAN DO:
There are three options for this service site:*
OPTION A: A group of L&C students from SEED (an undergraduate environmental action group) have been working with the Plaza to test the housing’s water quality and radon levels. On January 15th, L&C students will be holding a workshop to present the results of the tests and will educate residents about ways to keep their families safe from contaminants. L&C is hoping to provide "Tools for Change", such as water purifiers, for each of the 68 households at the Plaza. (Maximum capacity: 5 Volunteers)
OPTION B: While parents are in this workshop, children 5 and up will have the opportunity to go on a free trip to the Forestry Center, a fun and interactive museum located near the Oregon Zoo. L&C Volunteers are needed for play buddies and supervision. (Maximum capacity: 15 Volunteers)
OPTION C: For children under 5, childcare will be provided by L&C Volunteers in a room adjacent to the environmental workshop. (Maximum Capacity: 10 Volunteers)
*If you would like to participate in this service site, please write which option(s) (A, B, or C) you are interested in the "other/comments" box during registration. We will try to accomodate your choices as best as possible.
