Sample Financial Aid Awards for Graduate Students

Please note that these sample awards are provided for information purposes only. Financial aid awards are prepared based on a student's individual situation and therefore can and do vary from student to student.

Awards are designed to provide resources sufficient to cover the typical credit load for students in the particular program as well as a modest allowance for books and living expenses based on the number of months a student will be enrolled during the academic year.

Samples provided are typical of financial aid awards that first year graduate students received for students during the 2007/2008 academic year.

Master of Art in Teaching - Elementary

Award based on 11 months of enrollment and completion of 37 semester credits during the 2007/2008 academic year:

$8500 Federal Subsidized Stafford Loan*

$12,000 Federal Unsubsidized Stafford Loan

$23,620 Alternative Student Loan**

Award amounts are distributed in equal thirds over the course of the summer, fall, and spring semesters. Students must reapply for financial aid for the final summer semester in their program.

Award based on 11 months of enrollment and completion of 34 semester credits during the 2007/2008 academic year:

Award based on 8 months of enrollment and completion of 21 semester credits during the 2007/2008 academic year:

Award amounts are distributed in equal halves over the course of the fall and spring semesters. Students must reapply for financial aid for subsequent academic years in their program.

Other Degree Programs

Awards for students in the MAT Inservice, MEd Special Education and Masters in Educational Administration programs are prepared based on the student's individual academic plans. Students in these programs are elibible to borrow through the Federal Stafford Loan program up to $20,500 per academic year. They may also be eligible to apply for an alternative student loan should their expected educational costs exceed their other student loan eligibility.

Important Notes About the Loans

* The Federal Subsidized Stafford Loan is available to student who demonstrate sufficient financial need based on the information provided on their Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Students who do not demonstrate sufficient financial need may borrow additional funds through the Federal Unsubsidized Stafford Loan program up to a total of $20,500 per academic year.

** Alternative student loans are credit-qualified loans including both private student loans and Federal Grad PLUS loans. Students need to meet the loan program's credit-qualification standards or apply with a credit-worthy cosigner in order to receive the loan. The amount included on the award letter is the maximum amount which a student may request and not necessarily an indication that the student will be approved for the loan.
