Student Employment Classification & Wage Scale
It is recommended that you follow this uniform wage scale and model for categorizing student employment types on campus. This will help insure that all student employees are treated with equity and fairness in regard to compensation for work.
Classification When reviewing the following student employment positions, please be realistic and straightforward in your consideration of where these positions fall in the classification framework. It is important to base your assessment on the actual needs and demands of the work required rather than the student currently filling the position.
Clerical/Manual
This classification encompasses most student positions, which emphasize primarily clerical functions such as filing, preparing mailings, and processing forms and other basic office work. Positions may also involve varied tasks requiring the use of independent judgement. Tasks may involve frequent or extensive public contact, requiring a high level of interpersonal skills.
Technical
Positions involve highly specialized work requiring advanced levels of training and/or specialized skill. Performance level and outcome of work significantly impact the campus community. Supervision is minimal and positions may actually require students to supervise other student employees.
Positions may involve the operation of delicate, expensive equipment, or involve highly confidential information. Technical knowledge base is crucial and not arrived at through on-the-job training. It is unlikely that first or second year undergraduates would possess the requisite skills and technical expertise for these jobs. Examples include computer programmer and faculty research assistant.
Hourly Wage Ranges
These pay range guidelines take into consideration the increase in Oregon's minimum wage effective January 1, 2008. The minimum wage allowed is $7.95 and the maximum allowed is $9.00. However, within these parameters, supervisors have the flexibility to increase the hourly wage of employees by 15-25 cents per hour to reward exceptional performance. It is highly recommended that supervisors start their student employees at the minimum wage rate to allow room for advancement according to increased skill level. Hiring at the maximum rate means students would not be eligible for advancement. Exceptions to wage rates are approved by Student Financial Services. Student Financial Services reserves the right to deny a department's or organization's Federal Work-Study position and/or pay level request.
