Spanish Language Section

Spanish is the second-most important language in the United States today. It is spoken by forty million people here, and by almost four hundred million around the world, making Spanish one of the most useful languages in our increasingly globalized world. Our proximity to Spanish-speaking Latin America, and the widespread use of Spanish in Western, Southwestern, and Southern states (especially Florida and the territory of Puerto Rico), mean that learning Spanish and understanding the Hispanic culture are essential to living and working in the US today. Spanish is also one of the oldest and richest Romance languages, and the culture has roots in antiquity. Figures such as Cervantes, Lorca, Zapata, "Che" Guevara, Rigoberta Menchú and Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz are part of this heritage.

The Spanish section offers classes in grammar, culture and literature for the Hispanic Studies major, as well as for the Foreign Languages major and the Latin American Studies minor. Knowing Spanish gives the student access to six Lewis & Clark overseas programs in Chile (Santiago and Valparaíso), the Dominican Republic (Santo Domingo and Santiago de los Caballeros), Ecuador (summer and semester programs), and Spain (Sevilla).
