Institutional Biosafety Committee

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) has established mandatory guidelines for research involving recombinant DNA (rDNA). These guidelines specify practices for constructing and handling rDNA molecules and those organisms/viruses containing rDNA molecules. The role of Lewis & Clark College's Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) is to assure the safe and compliant handling of research involving recombinant DNA (rDNA) by Lewis & Clark investigators or by others at Lewis & Clark facilities.

IBC procedures are federally mandated. Regardless of the source of supporting funds, Principal Investigators (PIs) must have IBC approval to use recombinant DNA or other biohazardous materials prior to the initiation of the research. The PI is required to submit an application to the IBC. The IBC reviews for compliance with NIH Guidelines and approves those research projects it finds to be in conformity.
