Trillium QuickStart
This guide is intended to give you a "quick start" into Trillium. See the Trillium FAQ to determine if Trillium is right for you. For more information, contact a Web Communications Consultant.
I. General Anatomy of a Trillium Page
Breadcrumbs, main content area, and right-hand side bar content can be created and edited by your department. Academic departments can work with Public Affairs and Communications Web Consultants to customize background color and photo stripe.
The left hand navigation menu populates throughout the entire site and can be customized and edited by departments working with a Web Consultant. This menu makes it easy for visitors to navigate from page to page within your site.
"Objects" are non-HTML files which can be uploaded to Trillium. Objects are most commonly images (jpeg or gif format) which can be inserted into a Web page. Objects may also be other types of documents such as Adobe Acrobat documents (pdf's), or Word documents.
II. Log in to Trillium
How to log in
There are two ways to log in to your Trillium page. The fastest and most convenient way is to use the "secret button." The secret button is actually a small transparent image found on every trillium page, on the upper left, just above the photo stripe. Mouse over the general area until the pointer turns to a hand (indicating an invisible link). Click the link, and a login screen will appear.
If you know how to find the button, you can log in this way
1. navigate to the page which needs editing
2. find and click the secret button
3. log in with your username and password
4. you can now edit your page
Trillium also offers a general log in page
1. go to http://www.lclark. edu/trillium/
2. click the "login here" link
3. log in with your username and password
4. you will find yourself at the control center
III. Edit Your Page
How to edit a page:
1. Log on to Trillium
2. if you log on with the secret button, you will find that your page is in edit mode and you can select and edit any available text block.
3. if you log in through the log in page, find the page that needs editing, and select "edit page."
4. your page is now in "edit mode"

Content blocks:
Trillium pages are built with "content blocks."
In edit mode, each content block is preceeded by a set of edit buttons. Each set of buttons refers to the block of content directly below.
rmv = remove content block
ins = insert new block
arrow up/down = move content block up or down in queue
edit = edit existing block
You can edit blocks in the white content area and in the shaded sidebar (if you are using a sidebar template). The lefthand navigtion menu must be hand-edited by PubCom's web communications team. Contact your Web Communications Consultant for more details.
Types of Content Blocks
1. Headline
HTML headlines are hierarchical. Use the dropdown to select headline size. Headline size "1" (also known as "h1") is the top level headline, "2" is a first subhead, and so on.
Headlines should never be used for anything but headlines. They should not be used in place of boldface text, and they should not be made into links.
2. Text
Text blocks offer several options: you can select a plain text block, text block with a headline, or text block with photo left- or right- aligned with or without a headline.
The text block option reads every line break as a paragraph marker. When using text blocks, avoid double-spacing text, and understand that every single-spaced line break will generally be interpreted by browsers as a double-space.
If you need lines broken with a single space, you can use the break tag or select the "address block" option.
3. Address Block
The address block reads line breaks single-spaced line breaks. It works great for short, single spaced lines, such as addresses.
4. Image
Images can be added as part of a text block (above), or as stand alone images using the image block.
5. Stand-alone Link
If you don't feel comfortable typing in HMTL link tags, you can use the "stand alone link" block. Type the URL starting with 'http' in the URL box, and the text for the link in the text box.
6. List of Items
Select "bullet list" or "numbered list." you can switch from one to another as needed. Don't worry too much about how many items will be on the list; you can always add more later, and empty list items are automatically deleted.
If you know how to create a link with html, you can make list items into links.
7. Table
This is for tabular data. You can select or change options such as border/no border or how much cellpadding. Cellpadding is the area between the content and the border. For a table containing text info, try a cellpadding of 3-5.
8. Existing Content Block
Every content block used on your Trillium site is found here. If there's a list of links or block of text you want to use on more than one page, just create it once and then you can insert it on any of your pages by selecting it from the Existing Content Block list.
9. Advanced Users Only: HTML Code
There are times when the options offered by Trillium are insufficient for a task at hand. If you know how to use HTML, you can select this option.
Many, but not all, HTML tags are permitted by Trillium. Please only use this option if you are an advanced enough user to troubleshoot any problems that occur. A misplaced or missing HTML tag can wreck havoc on the entire page, or worse, it can wreck the page on some browsers but not on others.
When using HTML, be sure to check your page display on different systems and different browsers. And when in doubt, call on a Web consultant.
IV. Manage your Account
- Make sure to keep your account password in a secure place. If it is lost and forgotten, you will need to contact Information Technology and have it re-set.
- It is vital that someone monitors and responds to email sent to the Trillium account email. Usually, this is the Web liasion who can answer or forward messages as needed. Visit IT's Manage Forwarding page to forward account email to an individual staff or faculty account.
